Need some new ideas on how to practice? Look no further!

Steven Mead uses a variety of method books, in fact has over 50 books that get opened and used regularly.

He writes:…. “ I have always been curious about how famous players and teachers write down how they do things and how they recommend other to train to be better brass musicians and instrumentalists. What works for one person may not work for someone else. Many of the method books commonly available are not very helpful in HOW to play the exercises. I'm sure that any successful METHOD must explain HOW to practice, what to think about when you are playing and what to listen for. Also, what is the role of the teacher in the lesson when the student is playing ? I play a fair bit in student's lessons, to demonstrate hopefully better than words what I'd like them to achieve. But when I'm playing, they are not necessarily taking it all in or musically reacting. Well, Wolfgang Guggenberger in one book, seems to have found all the answers. He is a trumpet player and teacher and his book was initially aimed at high brass, but it is absolutely perfect for euphonium and baritone players too. Its only available in TREBLE clef and the brilliant text is in both English and German.

What makes this book so successful is that all the exercises are in duet form, so you can either practice alone and play either part, or practice with a fellow student, colleague, friend, band member and of course fantastic for working with a teacher. The book is meticulous in its stressing of dynamics, tone quality and in fact demands the player is listening all the time. The layout and general presentation of the book is about the best I have ever encountered, so easy to use and its quality from start to finish. It has 152 pages and will last you throughout your career, and is of benefit to players from intermediate to professional level.

Wolfgang Guggenberger

I have to congratulate Mr.Guggenberger on explaining so clearly what it is we do when we play well and shows all the steps we need to get there. The chapters are laid out as follows:

  1. Mouthpiece-Studies
  2. Long Tone Studies
  3. Flow Studies 1
  4. Flow Studies 2
  5. Sound Development
  6. Arpeggio 1
  7. Arpeggio 2
  8. Arpeggio 3
  9. Scales 1
  10. Scales 2
  11. Interval Study
  12. Lip Flexibilities
  13. Range Studies 1
  14. Range Studies 2
  15. Warming Down 1
  16. Warming Down 2 (Pedal Tones)

Although its originally for trumpet the all important low 4th valve notes above pedal Bb are all these, just what trumpet do I'm not sure but its exactly what so many other trumpet books don't have, the full range used in the practice routine.

I can't praise this book highly enough that why I 'm recommending it to all my students and of course I'm using it myself”.
