I agree with all you have said. Your expertise and musicianship is without doubt. The adjudicators are in my humble opinion, old school whilst you are current and performing. It would be foolish to have teachers who are not up to the standard of their pupils and similarly we should have top CURRENT musicians to judge contests such as the open. I have heard one of the men was judging a primary school recorder competition, humble but not something I imagine the like of you and Kingy doing!

Hi Steve,
Yes, I agree with you 100%..AND .. I am sure most people around the Banding World will do too!
We need....good...reliable..consistent adjudicators..simple as that.
These adjudicators are up and coming and available, all it takes is for the relevant authorities to wake up and realise that adjudication 'at present' is not 'sour grapes' for loosing bands, but, simply..a joke!!
Somebody needs to wake up the relevant authorities ....and NOW!!!

Steven i totally agree with your comments, regading saturday's contest. It's time the whole so called top men of our movement stepped back and took stock of themselves and the movement as a whole. As Will Carling said about the RFU it's run by "Old farts" so is the bass band movement. I have no involvment with any band that played at the contest on saturday and did not attend so i can't comment about the result, but how many times has this situation arose. TIME FOR CHANGE IS REQUIRED

Very disappointing comments from an experienced name. The adjudicators present yesterday were a range of ages that gave a fair and educated verdict.

Given that Whitburn were drawn last, the aging adjudicators did not have time to forget the performance they just simply didn’t like it - something that was quite clear in your adjudicator comments I believe.

Sometimes you play well and get nothing, other times you play pretty average and win i.e. Troon - That contesting I’m afraid

Hi Steven,

Well said, I respect your comments, well aired from a true musician. It is easier to say nowt.
Had the adjudicators anything about them surely they would rather conduct a band in the British Open. rather than get less money for adjudicating?
There are clear winners, however I have heard silly referrals of Tafia?
Reasons why I & others tend to stay away from a movement not moving forward. Pension them off, generally age does affect performance, hearing & concentration level.
Bravo!

Steven, you are extremely brave to air this, it is a subject people have discussed for years.Contesting is the centre of banding now and so often they just get it wrong
Fresh faces are so badly needed..many of them are actually playing and doing it, thats the probpem. Lets hope people understand.

Hi Steve, totally agree with your comments today. Seems to be the same bunch of adjudicators year after year, lets get some younger talent in the box who can actually remember and recall whats gone on for the last seven hours!!
See you soon

I think your article is absolutely spot on. Having not been at the British Open today I can not comment on the results at all. However I do not understand how the same adjudicators appear at the British Open almost every year or every other year for the last 20 years! No offence to Brisbane but surely it would have been fairer to include another British band in the British Open who work every year to try and get through the dreaded Blackpool contests.
